paper bag 03:45
i called you up looking for answers. disappointed you didn't pick up, i grabbed my backwards cap from the hamper hopped on my bike and i rode away. i left a brown paper bag on the front porch of your old man's place yesterday. lit it up with my light green bic and rang the doorbell and ran away. i can't wait til this is over wake me up when this is over (wake me up when this is over) see you around a few doors down in a tree holding my breath keeping quiet my pulse jumped out of my chest in a blaze my innocence i closed my eyes and slipped away wake me up this is over (i can't wait til this is over) i can't come down (see you around)

about

i called you up looking for answers.
disappointed you didn't pick up,
i grabbed my backwards cap from the hamper
hopped on my bike and i rode away.

i left a brown paper bag on the front porch
of your old man's place yesterday.
lit it up with my light green bic and
rang the doorbell and ran away.

i can't wait til this is over
wake me up when this is over
(wake me up when this is over)
see you around

a few doors down in a tree holding my breath
keeping quiet my pulse jumped out of my chest
in a blaze my innocence
i closed my eyes and slipped away

wake me up this is over
(i can't wait til this is over)
i can't come down
(see you around)

----------

I started writing this song on election day 2016. I put off going to an election “party” that night as this song spontaneously flowed out of me. I kind of ignored the news, but gleaned enough to want to crawl back toward a simpler time… Now, in 2020, after a tumultuous personal and public four years, I am glad to finally have the energy and perspective to have finished this song and share it with you. This song was not easy to finish because of the many baggages that accumulated around it for so long. When we tracked the main parts of the song together, I didn’t sing at all—the third verse was just a mashup of the first two. The lyrics began as a metaphor for the 2016 election, shifted into a revisitation of my (real and idealized) adolescents, and now has been changing still.

As a band, we went to record this song the last weekend in March 2020 that was the beginning of lockdown. As we drove home at the end of the 10-hour day we passed a large illuminated sign that read “COVID-19 is here”. What a strange day. We felt we were risking it all to record this song (and 4 more songs to come). None of the songs were really finished. It was the last day that we have all played music together, and now that half the band has moved away from Providence (myself included), boring’s lineup is a big question mark.

Maybe that end-of-the-world vibe made it into this track. Thank you so much for listening :)
